Celebrate Trails Day

With 2026 marking 40 years since RTC opened its doors and decades of progress made for the trails movement, we’re planning to make this Celebrate Trails Day the biggest and best celebration yet.

In 1986, only 250 miles of known rail-trails were open in the U.S. For four decades, RTC has worked from coast to coast, helping to transform unused rail corridors and other rights-of-way into vibrant public places—ensuring a better future for America made possible by trails and the connections they inspire. Today, there are 42,000+ miles of multiuse trails on the ground, nearly 26,000 miles of which are rail-trails, laying the foundation for the 150+ trail networks that are in development nationwide—providing us with ways to safely walk, bike and get outside, and much to celebrate!

Celebrate Trails Day is more than a day outside; it’s a day of action. Trails improve lives, engage communities, create opportunities, inspire movement, support economies, provide access to nature, deliver joy and other benefits. When we show up for America’s trails, we send a message loud and clear that these spaces are essential to the places we live, work and play.
