Welcome Girl Scouts!
TRAIL: Walk is in a small quaint suburban town, The
walk will pass through a traditional downtown area as well as quiet
neighborhoods with homes dating from the 1700 and 1800's. TRAIL
BACKGROUND: The earliest known residents were members of a subtribe of the
Lenni Lenapi. The first Europeans arrived in 1665 under the leadership of
Lord Carteret. Early records show a bill of sale from the Native Americans
to Carteret dated 1677. It is accepted that the area became known as
Metuchen after the Indian chief, Matouchin, who lived between 1630 and
1700. A small farming village developed at the crossroads and a meeting
house was built in 1717. Later a general store and taverns were added. In
the early 19th century Metuchen grew as a way station for coaches carrying
passengers from New York City and points in NJ. In the period after the
Civil War, Metuchen became a bedroom community of NYC. Many of the town's
older homes were built during this era, as was the train station (1888),
one of the oldest in NJ. |
