Trail / Event Description:  The trail is mostly sidewalks with some natural surface trail through the Arboretum on the Drew campus.

Originally known as “Bottle Hill” before it officially became Madison in 1834, Madison is still known as “The Rose City,” due to the greenhouses which began to appear in 1856. Long after they were replaced first by Californian, and later by South and Central American growers, what remains is a beautiful residential commuter town, which is home to two universities and a wide range of restaurants from the casual to the elegant. The downtown is a Commercial Historic District, on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places. On this walk, we will visit both Drew University, and Fairleigh Dickinson University. Founded as a Methodist seminary in 1867, until July, Drew was led by former governor Tom Kean, who served as President of Drew while he also served as Chairman of the September 11th Commission. From Drew we will proceed to the Madison campus of FDU, and see the spectacular Mansion, designed by Stanford White in the 1890’s. Donated by a patron, this building replicates a wing of Henry VIII’s Hampton Court, and its 100 rooms are decorated in Italian marble. With its beautiful hilltop views, this building reminds us: “It’s nice to be the King!”
