TRAIL BACKGROUND:   Sea Girt is a town of 1 square mile in area with a population of just over 2000 residents. It was founded in 1875 and has been a summer destination for many years. It was in Sea Girt that then-Governor Woodrow Wilson learned he had been selected as the Democratic nominee for president during the summer of 1912.  The most famous landmark in Sea Girt is the Sea Girt Lighthouse at Beacon Blvd and Ocean Avenue. It began operating in 1896 and was the last active lighthouse built on the Atlantic coast, going out of service in 1945. It is one of 20 remaining in NJ. In 1956, the lighthouse was sold to the Coast Guard, then sold to the town in 1956. It has been leased to the Sea Girt Lighthouse Citizen's Committee for 25 years. There are free guided tours on Sundays form 2-4PM.  Another landmark in Sea Girt is the Parker House, built in 1880. It is still in operation as a summer hotel, restaurant and bar. Some of the original building still remains despite renovations.
