City and  State: Asbury Park,   NJ
Host Club: Princeton Area Walkers
Distance and Trail Rating:  10K      1
Start Point Address:    Twisted Tree, 609 Cookman Avenue, Asbury Park.
Event Description:  The trail takes you on the boardwalk and streets through Asbury Park. You will walk a short distance in Ocean Grove to view the beautiful Victorian homes and the Great Auditorium. At the northern end of the walk, you will see magnificent homes in Allenhurst and Loch Arbor. Asbury Park is named after Francis Asbury, the founder of Methodism in America. From the early 20th century into the 1960's, Asbury Park was a thriving beach resort. It is now in the midst of a revival with lots of interesting shops and art galleries along Cookman Ave.

First Night celebrations after our walk are from 6:00 PM until 10:00 PM Many of the shops and galleries along Cookman Ave. will be open, serving free refreshments and open for business. It is always a fun evening and worth the stay.

The walk in Asbury Park will take you to many historic sites - "The First Prominade Boardwalk" which was built in 1880, through the Casino built in 1929 and the Convention Hall, both designed by architects Warren and Wetmore who also designed New York's Grand Central Station. It was in front of the Convention Hall where there was the tragic shipwreck of the Morro Castle on September 8, 1934. After the Convention Hall you will pass the Stone Pony, which became the start for many famous musicians - notably Bruce Springsteen. Hope you will see a replica of the famous mural of "Tillie" the clown face.

The walk passes the Berkely Carteret Hotel, which opened in 1925 during World War II. It was home to the Royal British Navy and at one point was a naval hospital.

The walk also goes on Grand Ave., home to many of the city churches of many different denominations.
