is a large embroidered patch showing a sandy trail and salt marsh
vegetation at Hammonasset Beach State Park.

TRAIL HIGHLIGHTS:
The 5k and 10k trails traverse the Hammonasset Beach State Park and campgrounds (500 sites),
the largest of 20 state parks in Connecticut and the largest shoreline nature sanctuary in the
state. Several informational plaques along the route explain the geologic history of the area.
10k walkers can visit Meigs Point Nature Center, a new building that uses geothermal heating and
cooling technology and photovoltaic solar panels. Exhibits feature live birds, reptiles, amphibians,
and more. There are great views of the 2-mile beach, Long Island, and Faulkner’s Island from the Meigs
Point observation platform, which sits atop a rocky moraine left by the retreating several-mile-thick
glacier 20,000 years ago.

TRAIL RATING:
The 5k and 10k trails are rated 1B and are not recommended for strollers/wheelchairs,
due to the soft beach sand.
START POINT LOCATION & HOURS:
DUNKIN DONUTS, 1315 Boston Post Rd., Madison. Tel: 203-245-1338.
Hours: Daily, dawn to dusk. Water and restrooms available.
DIRECTIONS:
FROM I-91N or I-91S: From I-95, either direction, take Exit 62. Proceed south on
Hammonasset Connector (Rt. 450) to Rt. 1, also known as the Boston Post Rd. Do NOT cross
Rt. 1 into Hammonasset Beach State Park (a hefty parking fee would be required), but rather
turn left (east) on Rt. 1. Proceed almost 0.5 miles to Dunkin Donuts on left.

PARKING:
Dunkin Donuts parking lot. Parking is also available at the Shoreline Greenway Trail Parking Lot,
on south side of Rt. 1, just east of entrance to the park.
