TRAIL HIGHLIGHTS:
New London, located at the mouth of the Thames River where it meets Long Island Sound, is home to a historic coastal fort with an
interesting museum and trail system with lovely harbor views. The U.S. Coast Gueard Academy is located here, and across the river in
Groton is a major U.S. Navy submarine base. Historic buildings include 18th C. Hempstead House and the adjacent stone Huguenot House,
along with the home of ship captain Nathaniel Shaw (which houses the New London County Historical Society). The wealth from the whaling
industry has left its mark on the city in the homes known as "Whale Oil Row."
Visitors to New London can enjoy a pleasant walk along the riverfront. Nearby are the Arboretum and Botanical Garden at Connecticut
College, Ocean Beach Park, the Old Customs House, Nathan Hale Schoolhouse, and the bouhood home of Nobel Prize-winning playwright
Eugene O'Neill (Monte Cristo Cottage).
