TRAIL HIGHLIGHTS: Portland Downtown walk passes historic homes, churches and a shipbuilding site (Gildersleeve). The Connecticut River, which flows along the town's entire western and southern borders, has contributed significantly to the rich historical heritage as well as to the social and economic development of Portland. Brownstone quarrying, shipbuilding, and tobacco farming were the oldest industries in Portland. Today, this New England town is home to 9,500 residents. For an additional 10k, you leave Dunkin' Donuts and cross the Connecticut River on the Arigoni Bridge to explore Middletown and the Wesleyan University campus. At3,428', the Arigoni Bridge is the longest bridge in CT. It was built in 1938 and won first prize in the AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction) large bridge category.
